Montreal Improv introduces its first Skill Series workshop of the fall session! The Skill Series is a collection of short, four-week, three-hour workshops taught by experienced improvisers and teachers and designated for students who have completed level 5 or higher at Montreal Improv Theatre. They will be offered every other month over the next year, so keep your eyes peeled for more!
Please note that this particular workshop is for women, women-identifying and non-binary people only.
— Our Stage Too: An Advanced Improv Intensive for Women, Women Identifying, and Non-Binary Folks
This workshop series created and taught by D.J. Mausner seeks to give space for women, women identifying, and non-binary folks who love improv and are interested in doing it at an advanced level, but find it difficult to excel in pre-existing spaces.
Over the course of four workshops, we will explore the obstacles we may face due to our identites, share our stories, and seek proactive solutions for these problems on and off stage. Further, each workshop will have a different focus rooted in bettering ourselves as performers.
We will work on defining who we are individually as improvisers & what we bring to a team or show, sharing a stage and gaging when (and how) to assert yourself in a scene, group connectivity and being present (with guest instructor Amanda McQueen!), and refining formats and show premises and putting them into action. Space is limited to 10-12 participants. All members must have completed Level 5 (Exceptions may be made at the discretion of the instructor. Send her a message if you're adamant!)
A bit more about D.J.:
D.J. has been performing improv for eight years and producing shows for six. While programming and producing shows for the Montreal Improv Theatre as the Associate Artistic Director, she is also the co-founder and producer Theatre Sainte Catherine's monthly flagship show, Joketown and it's off-shoots, The Joketown Crier, The Joketown Video Series, and Good Time City. She performs with former Montreal Improv House Team and Del Close Marathon Alum, Mongrel, and duos Good Boy and Crybabies, the latter of which appeared in Off-JFL this past summer. She co-hosts and co-produces Experts, a comedy podcast focused on women identifying and non binary guests.
This summer she co-won the Just For Laughs Homegrown Comics Competition, appeared in two Best of The Fest showcases, and appeared in six nights in Off-JFL, performing stand-up, improv, and sketch comedy. D.J. has trained at The Second City in Toronto and The Upright Citizens Brigade in New York. She developed this workshop to help strengthen the skills of already talented women and non-binary players in the community.
