The ECOLE Project fee levy is up for renewal in the Winter 2018 SSMU Referendum. You can help us by voting YES in the polling period from March 19th-21st @ 3pm!
The ECOLE Project strives to be a model of urban sustainable living. We are a collective living house and community space on McGill’s downtown campus. ECOLE is the home to 10 live-in Facilitators, a movement building space for groups to organize in and the central hub for the sustainability community at McGill. Our mission is to bring together McGill students, faculty and staff and Montreal community members in the pursuit of sustainable living by means of applied student research, alternative education, and community building.
ECOLE was born in 2011 out of a vision of providing hands-on educational opportunities outside of the textbook environment. The project originally went under the name of Alternative University, (AltU). From there, they came together with McGill professors and to dream up a communal living space that supported alternative education programming. Thus, the Educational Community Living Environment (ECOLE) was born! In 2013-2014, ECOLE was granted seed funding through the Sustainability Projects Fund. The pilot project year began in September 2014, when the first cohort of Facilitators moved in to the McGill Residence located at 3559 University St. ECOLE passed a SSMU fee levy referendum question in Winter 2014 and got support to fund the project until the end of the Winter 2018 semester.
The $2.00 opt-outable student fee goes toward supporting our open study lounge hours, free space booking service and putting on events and programming around environmental and social sustainability. Read more about what we do in the link to the FAQs below, or go to our website: ecoleproject.com
We believe that ECOLE provides a central space that reflects the community’s values and commitment to sustainability. Additionally, McGill’s upcoming Vision 2020 Climate and Sustainability Action Plan has identified promoting access to extra-curricular opportunities in sustainability for undergraduate students as a priority. Your YES vote in the ECOLE Project fee levy renewal referendum will contribute to the momentum of building a culture of sustainability at McGill!
